Film 160 Blog - Victor

This past Wednesday, we had guest speaker Kirsten Johnson and watched a shortened clip of one of her films. I enjoyed her film and I thought some of the shots were very cool including the shot where she walked through the balloons and the shot of the boy next to the mountains which was angled upwards to see the blimp in the sky as well. This film was more personal to me due to the fact that my best friend is in the Army and is currently in Afghanistan right now, so it was interesting to see some things that he may see everyday over there, especially the lack of color in the environment. When it came to Kirsten Johnson's speech however, I was not really sure what the purpose of it was and I am unsure if I agree with things that she said. I feel as if she was trying to make a lot of things deeper than they were and was exaggerating the responses given to her in order to turn it into a more thoughtful response. For this assignment I analyzed a film scene from the movie Interstellar. The scene I chose was the scene when the characters land on Miller’s planet. The scene begins with the cameras cutting from each character to the next, and the cameras move naturally in the very beginning even shaking a little, so it seems as if it is cutting back and forth between each character looking at each other speaking in a way. When Anne Hathaway exits the spaceship, the camera switches to a very stable long shot, and the colors seem tinted grey scale. I think this was to emphasize the vastness and stillness of the environment they are in, which is an enormous ocean which seems to cover the entire planet.  The camera cuts momentarily between showing Anne Hathaway’s face and then her point of view of the surrounding scenery which seem to be mountains in the distance. Near Westwood, Long Island at around 5:00AM I go for a run and then spend an hour outside to listen to the sounds. The sun is barely out at this time, so it is pretty quiet with mostly just white noise. Occasionally you hear the birds waking up and chirping. It's particularly breezy and since it's so silent it's easy to hear the leaves rustling around. The occasional runner comes by and all you hear are footsteps which get softer as they get further away and eventually disappear. A woman walks by walking her golden retriever and says hello to me and makes some small talk. Her dog is very big and his breathing is quite loud in the silence that surrounds us. Cars come by rarely but any car that comes by is very quiet and just sounds like another gust of wind momentarily. I decided to study web development and media because it allows me to more freely express myself through my work. I was bored and unmotivated when learning the  theories of economics out of a textbook, so I strayed from that path in order to learn something more personal and exciting to me. I believe the systematic learning in place for majors such as Economics and other fields does not allow for flexibility/expression which should be possible no matter what you study. There are key fundamentals required in every discipline, but individuality is the key to innovation and leads to the creation of new things. This is why media and specifically web development always fascinated me  because it allows for a visual representation of your style on a massive platform accessed across the globe.
